Friday 20th September

This week we have been singing the nursery rhyme 'Humpty Dumpty'. We are encouraging the children to join in with the words and actions.

We have been practising building a stable wall for Humpty Dumpty to sit on.
We talked about overlapping the bricks so the wall does not fall over.

An Introduction to Phase 1 Phonics

At Whiteley Primary School in Phonics, we first focus on Phase One which is all about the children tuning into sounds around them, listening and getting ready to develop oral blending and segmenting skills.

Phase One concentrates on developing children's speaking and listening skills and lays the foundations for the phonic work which starts in Phase Two.

This week we have been concentrating on awareness of sounds that we can hear around us in the environment. We have also thought about the sounds we can hear in words eg, pot  p-o-t.

Maths

In maths this week the children have been encouraged to quantify sets of objects by subitising rather than counting. When subitising, children can say how many there are in a small group of objects by 'just seeing' and knowing straightaway without needing to count.

The children have been learning
  •  to represent the number in a given set by showing the same number on their fingers.
  • to name quantities with number words (eg. " I can see three")
  • To match sets to numerals
  • To make their own arrangements that can be subitised.

Bug club
The school code to access Bug Club is krm6. Your child's log in details are in their purple Phonics booklet.
This week we have allocated the books below. As you can see, there is some great guidance about how to use these picture books to develop your child's early Phonic skills.

Lola

This week at school we have introduced the children to our listening programme "Helping Young Children to Listen".  The programme uses Lola the leopard to introduce the following listening rules through games and activities.  We will be revisiting these rules during circle time and our learning partner work each day.

1. A good listener tries to keep still.

2. A good listener tries to stay quiet.

3. A good listener looks at the speaker.

4. A good listener tries to remember what the speaker has said.

Nursery rhyme dress up  day

On Wednesday 23rdOctober we will having a sponsored nursery rhyme sing along to raise money to provide new creative opportunities in the outdoor classroom for the reception children to use.  On this day each class will be singing as many nursery rhymes as they can within 10 minutes.
We will also be asking the children to come to school dressed as a nursery rhyme character.  This could be as simple as a dress for Little Miss Muffet or shorts and t-shirt for Jack (Jack and Jill).  It would be great if your child could say which character they are dressed as.

Many thanks for your support.
