It has been lovely to congratulate children on completing their first 10 reads for our home reading challenge.  Please continue to hand these in and we will give out the stickers for completing the first part.


This week week we have been thinking about celebrations and why they are special.
We have then learnt about the Jewish celebration of 'Shabbat' and have thought about the similarities and differences with other celebrations. 

You might like to talk to your child about celebrations you take part in with your family.  Maybe look back at some photos. Do all people share those celebrations? Do all children celebrate in the same way?
How do different children celebrate their birthdays? 


Phonics

This week in phonics we have revisited the phase 3 sounds y, z, zz, qu
We have practised writing words and sentences using these sounds.

This week's book to read on Bug Club to practise these phonemes is 'Chick gets lost'.

Please read this book 2 more times at home to support your child's developing phonic and blending knowledge.
We have continued to practise reading all of the phase 2 and phase 3 tricky words so that we can work towards quicker sight recognition.

Maths

This week we have been using rhymes to help us learn the pairs of numbers that make 5.  We have learnt the sentence...

"5 is made of _ and _; _ and _ make 5 altogether."

... for each pair of numbers.

 Friday 18th October This week, we have been learning the nursery rhyme 'Hickory, dickory dock'.  We have looked at a variety of clocks and noticed that all the numbers go in order.  We have also spent time talking about the timings of our school day e.g. we start our day at 9 o'clock, we eat lunch at 12 o'clock. Phonics This week we have begun Phase 2 and have introduced the letters s, a, t , p.  We have learnt the names of the letters, the sounds they make and the accompanying action. Friday 27th September This week we have been singing the nursery rhyme 'Twinkle Twinkle Little Star'. We are encouraging the children to join in with actions. We have been working on the children's use of scissors.  Lots of children have found this very challenging.  Please see the correct way to hold scissors below. Right handed scissor hold Left handed scissor hold You might like to give your child opportunities to use scissors at home.  Perhaps they could help you by snipping the tops of green beans when you are cooking.  They could practise snipping the tops of paper tubes to make models.   Friday 6th June  This week at school we have been learning about fairytales.  We have been reading "Goldilocks and the Three Bears". We have been practising retelling the story in groups and role playing the characters.  We worked on using different kinds of expression in our voices to show the different characters.  You might like to practise this skill at home when your child is reading to you. Phonics This week in phonics we have revised the digraphs long oo, short oo, ar and or.
